![]() BarbetThe Barbet is a medium-sized French gundog. AppearanceThe breed stands 18 to 22 inches (46-56 cm) in height and weighs 33 to 55 pounds (15 to 25 kg). The Barbet is a prototypic water dog, with a long, woolly coat that is curly or wavy. Colors of the breed are black, chestnut, fawn, gray, and white, with or without markings; mixed colors are common. TemperamentThe Barbet’s personality is described as companionable, gay, obedient and intelligent. He is a capable retriever for waterfowl hunting and a faithful companion. HistoryThe Barbet is thought to be the original source of the various water dog breeds (Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, American Water Spaniel, and so on). His actual origin is lost in antiquity but probably stems from corded herding stock and perhaps griffon hounds. The breed is little known outside of France.
